Esquire Magazine recently published the list of Candy that You Shouldn’t Give Out to Children.  According to them, these candies stink!

1.)  Candy Corn-  Because it has the, quote, “consistency of a car tire.”

2.)  Bit-O-Honey-  “Esquire” says if you give out Bazooka bubble gum, Necco wafers, or Bit-O-Honey’s on Halloween, the kids who come to your door will be aged by “several decades.”

3.)  Twizzlers-  Because they’re not as good as Redvines

4.)  Starbursts-  Because according to “Esquire”, they have a “weird aftertaste” if you eat more than three.

5.)  Now and Laters-  Because they have to sit in the sun for a few hours before they’re soft enough to eat.

6.)  Smarties-  Because it’s just sugar pressed into a tablet, and according to “Esquire”, it shouldn’t qualify as candy.

7.)  Three Musketeers-  This is probably the most popular Halloween candy “Esquire” says you SHOULDN’T give out. Their reasoning is… “there’s just way too much nougat.”

8.)  Anything that isn’t candy-  “Esquire” says if you’re planning to give out carrot sticks, pennies, or apples without caramel . . . just leave your porch light off.

This little boy is awesome.  Like most five-year-old boys his age, Aidan loves monsters.  He loves drawing monsters, pretending to be a monster, and dressing up as one.  In fact, I bet if you were to ask him, I would imagine that he would tell you that he would one day like to grow up to BE a monster.

This past September, Aidan was diagnosed with with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.  He has survived his first round of chemo and is in high spirits, but doctors say that he is going to need to go through two to three more years of chemo treatments to beat this. Surprisingly, Aidan didn’t let this news drown his spirits.  Instead, he found solace in the one thing that he loves to do:  drawing monsters.

And as any family who has had to deal with a severe medical situation knows, these types of situations can not only be energy draining, they can also be detrimental to the families pocketbook.  Because of Aidan’s constant hospitalization, mom and dad both have encountered loss of wages and a never ending stack of medical bills.

Enter Etsy.com.  Aidan’s aunt setup an account on Etsy, the online marketplace, with the intentions of all donations of Aidan’s monster art going towards the needs of the family.  Within 24 hours of launching the store, over 400 prints were ordered and the store quickly ran out.  The same family that once considered getting 2nd and 3rd jobs and selling their house, suddenly found new hope.

For personal reasons, I have a difficult time getting behind medical research fund-raising events with a goal of raising dollars to find a cure for a specific disease.  However, that’s another topic for another day.

This is a cause that I can get behind.  This little five-year-old boy is a true entrepreneur, a fighter, and a true champion of the global cause of monsters everywhere.  To learn more about Aidan and to check out his artwork, click here to visit his website or his Etsy online store.

“You’re so vain.  You probably think this song is about you.”

New research has found that the average woman spends so much time checking her appearance that she loses five whole days a year to the habit.  According to the Daily Mail, the survey also found out that one in four women consider wearing makeup to be a “necessity,” with 40 percent admitting that they won’t leave the house natural.  Ironically, 1/4 of men feel the same way (see below).

The study also found out that women use enough lipstick everyday to draw a line from London to New York.

Another fun fact? The women in the study used enough lipstick every day to draw a line from London to New York. We wonder how far you could get with Jersey girls and their lip liner.

Now, about men wearing makeup.

Before today, the only decisions to make were one ply or two or under or over.  Now, add another choice to the mix!  On Monday, Kimberly-Clark is launching a line of Scott toilet paper that is free of a cardboard tube.

Major innovation here, people.

Kimberly-Clark estimates that the 17 billion toilet paper tubes produced each year in the U.S. generate 160 million pounds of trash, or enough tubing to stretch over a million miles when placed end to end.

This new modern innovation is available for purchase starting Monday at Walmart and Sam’s Club locations nationwide.

Car accidents are the leading killer of teens, however the number of fatalities resulting from teens being behind the wheel is going down.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of deaths caused by accidents involving teen drivers decreased from about 2,200 in 2004 to 1,400 in 2008.

Experts are crediting tougher driving laws with saving teens’ lives — not teens driving more cautiously — as well as safer cars and highways.

What did we do before caller ID?  I can’t tell you how many times my phone has rang this week, with someone on the other end encouraging me to vote for this candidate or that candidate.  Don’t even get me started on the political ads!  Candidates for Congress have spent more than $3.6 billion on this election so far, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, and they’re still going!

Suppose instead of running attack ads, slick mailers, and robocalls, our politicians lavished us with:

1. Tuition for 62,548 students at America’s most expensive university
Forbes recently listed Sarah Lawrence College as the nation’s priciest school, with a tuition rate of $57,556, including room and board.

2. 3,973,510 monthly mortgage payments
The average monthly mortgage payment, according to analysts at Freddie Mac, is $906 in principal and interest. $3.6 billion would buy one month’s reprieve from the repo man for almost 4 million Americans.

3. 48 million bleacher tickets for a World Series game

Cheap seats cost $75. Wouldn’t we all like to be there?

4. Annual salaries for 83,116 high school teachers
Payscale.com pegs the median high school teacher salary at $43,313. Don’t we need more math and science experts in the classroom?

4. American Airlines-  This year AA has had frequent incidents of mishandled baggage with an average of 4.07 reports per 1,000 passengers, according to the Air Travel Consumer Reports (this is the worst rating among the major airlines in the study). Modern day parenting here folks!  A mother in South Carolina offered her daughter $300 to stop using the social media site Facebook for one month.  The way the deal worked, Alyssa Rushing, 20, had to stay off of Facebook for a month, pour the hours she would have spent on the social networking site studying, and in exchange her mom would give her $300.

Like most her age, Alyssa indicated that she typically spent three to four hours on Facebook, logging on whenever she has a break in her day.
